Campfires of Heaven

(Bob Nolan)

I’m dreaming of a day before my old pals went away.

I wonder where they are.

Within my fancy, I can see their campfires in the sky

In every silver star.

The world’s at rest, the stars are shining their best

Like glowing campfires of heaven.

When all is still, I picture Buffalo Bill

Beside his campfire in heaven,

Calling to his buddies, “Come over for a spell.”

Then I hear the songs and the stories that they tell

Of that distant day when each one wandered away

To build his campfire in heaven

Among the campfires of heaven.

The Sons of the Pioneers sang "Campfires of Heaven" in the Columbia picture, "Riders of Black River" in 1939. Although the song was recorded for the Orthacoustic “Symphonies of the Sage" (the recording you are listening to as you read this) and was aired via Teleways Transcriptions, it was never commercially recorded. There are no copies of sheet music or lead sheets extant.
