Old Wyoming Trail

In 1935 and 1936, the Sons of the Pioneers worked with Charles Starrett in two B-Westerns for Columbia Studios: Gallant Defender and The Mysterious Avenger. Their role was simply to provide the musical interludes. In 1937 Columbia started production on a new series with Charles Starrett as the hero and the Sons of the Pioneers with supporting roles and speaking parts. Because of his good looks and athletic build, Bob Nolan had moved up to second lead after Starrett and his roles grew meatier with each film. The Old Wyoming Trail was the first in these 28 consecutive movies although Donald Grayson was still second lead. When Grayson left the series, it was only natural that Bob should move up to fill his place.

The Pioneers did not make much money from the films but they did get national exposure which increased their record sales. The public loved them.

This soundtrack version of Bob Nolan's Ridin' Home was sung just previous to this scene in the photo. You'll hear second lead Donald Grayson singing the solo, backed by the Sons of the Pioneers.
