Bob Nolan, Sailor
Calin Coburn Collections © 2004
Bob Nolan was an all-around athlete as a boy and water sports continued to interest him all his life. As a boy in Tucson, he spent most of his free time at the Wetmore Pool and during the summer holidays he worked there as a lifeguard. Later, in California, he worked for two years as a lifeguard at Santa Monica, California. He was an outstanding swimmer and he had always dreamed of sailing around the world. In 1945 he bought an 18-foot sailboat and named it Maní for his wife, P-Nuts. The photos on this page were taken then and some were used in movie magazines such as "Screen Stars" and "Movie Thrills" in 1946.

Unfortunately, because of the machinations of a crooked accountant, one trip to Hawaii was the only real voyage Bob was able to enjoy. And enjoy it he did, to the tune of seven songs now known as his "Island Songs".
