Album Review by O J Sikes:

Many Sons of the Pioneers fans have a favorite Pioneers trio. Some like the youthful sound from the 1930s when Roy Rogers was still just one of the boys. Others like the sound of the group from 1938-42, a period when they made so many movies with Charles Starrett and recorded the legendary Orthacoustic transcriptions. Some prefer what they call the Carson trio that appeared on-screen with Roy in the mid-40s and recorded most of the group's hits, while others prefer the Curtis trio from the Lucky-U Ranch radio show or the Nolan-Curtis-Perryman trio.

From 1959 until 1967, The trio of Tommy Doss, Dale Warren and Lloyd Perryman recorded a very successful series of LPs for RCA Victor. They had what many describe as the smoothest sound of any trio up to that point, and were often backed with lush orchestral arrangements. Lots of us liked the trio, but were less enthusiastic about the orchestras, preferring the sound of The Farr Brothers who were noticeably absent from those later sessions.

But wait! Between 1955 & '59, the Doss-Warren-Perryman trio, backed by the Farr Bros., did make a number of recordings. Most have been "lost" since then, because they were transcriptions for the Smokey the Bear radio series rather than commercial sides. They are the source material for this new CD set! So we can now have the best of both worlds, i.e. the trio sound of the 60s with backing only by Shug Fisher or Deuce Spriggens on bass, and the Farr Bros. on fiddle and guitar. 68 songs are here to illustrate the Sons of the Pioneers' work. Pioneers authority Ken Griffis wrote the liner notes, which are well illustrated with photos from Dale Warren's collection and Ken's as well. A "must have" collection!
